The Evolution of a Wikipedia Page

I’d like you to watch this screencast about the evolution of the heavy metäl ümlaüt. The screencast is a few years old, so the current wikipedia entry has changed since then, but it’s a great look at how collaboration is happening on these articles.
The discussion pages are fascinating to me, and are a critical ingredient in the success of Wikipedia. It can get heated because it’s Wikipedia’s policy to keep a neutral point of view (NPOV) and people tend to have strong opinions about certain articles. After you’ve watched the movie about the Evolution of a page, look at the discussion around the Evolution article. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes of the world’s encyclopedia.
Prompt:
Go back and look at what you contributed in class on Saturday. Has your entry been accepted or rejected by the community? Look at the discussion page for any info, then tell us what happened. (Please insert a link to the page you’ve contributed to.)

I edited the page about the town where I live, Santa Cruz. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Cruz%2C_California). I added Neary Lagoon Park to the Neighborhood Park section, not noticing that it is already listed in the Greenbelt District. I have no idea what the distinction is between a park and the Greenbelt District. There is no mention of the post or removal in the Discussion section, but I did find the discussions entertaining.
P.S. It’s pretty cool to see the Motorhead logo on an assignment page. Lemmy would be proud.
I made a small change to the Ten Essentials page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Essentials
It is a “list of essential items hiking authorities promote as recommended for safe travel in the backcountry.” I just added a snake bite kit to the first aid kit section. It isn’t a very controversial change, and it is near the bottom of the page, so it still remains. No discussions have happened since my post.
I had made an addition to the sport fishing page, and a whole day later, it’s still there.
Sport fishing was previously dominated by men, however more women are participating in this sport.
There were no discussions on this article.

I wanted to add a picture of me with my fish, but I couldn’t figure out how.

I was unable to make a change in class the other day but I did make one today. I added information to the link on Cardiff State Beach. There was no information on San Elijo State Beach so I added it there. I could have created a new entry, but decided just to add it there.

I made a change to the Cordoba, Spain article under religious architecture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordoba_%28city%2C_Spain%29#Religious_architecture
I added that the Mezquita, although constructed by Muslims, contains pillars that date back to Roman and Visogothic time periods. My addition was accepted but there wasn’t any further discussion about it. Nice to know I have the facts straight.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_Heights%2C_San_Diego%2C_California
On Saturday I choked and could’ve think of something to add (I actually got caught up in reading about Pixar Studios during that time). I have since added to the University Heights entry thinking I must know something about my neighborhood that isn’t on there. I added some info on the street names in UH. So far it hasn’t been changed and there is very little discussion of any kind for it.
I made it into wikipedia with my accepted addition(I think it is still there) of schools in the city where I grew up Villa Hills in Kentucky: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villa_Hills
There was no discussion on my post, I do not think many people in the area are using wikis:)
I made a change to the San Diego Padres wikipage. I added the name of the minor league pitcher that the Padres received as part of the Tony Clark trade. I saw nothing about the change on the discussion page. The change is still there, so I guess it was accepted.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pro_Tools#Pro_Tools_LE_systems
I added a couple of sentences to the section “Pro Tools LE” regarding the FXpansion VST —->RTAS converter.
It is still there. And I am still here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pro_Tools#Pro_Tools_LE_systems
I added to the section “Pro Tools LE” regarding the VST to RTAS adapter by FXpansion. I also added the part about there being no Automatic Plugin Delay Compensation (PDC).
It’s still there.
I am going to check out the Vespa page next….
I added a note about a film that was shot partially at my school; it was Gleaning the Cube with Christian Slater.
The powers that be did not reject my comment and there was no discussion.

I had started the definition for ‘wiki’ and some kind soul expounded upon it. It’s like I watered a seed and it grew. The definition is way better now.
As for the wikipedia change, it’s still there. I had fixed some grammar on my high school’s page.
I also could not think of anything to add to a Wikipedia page on Saturday, so I just added to the Rooney page that the Jonas Brothers showed up their Hollywood show. Someone deleted my addition stating that it was “irrelevant to the band.”
I looked at the history of the person who deleted my comment, and I found it amusing that the person had been written up numerous times for vandalizing other pages on Wikipedia.
Interesting…
I’m not sure that watching a wiki page evolve can be considered “hypnotic”, but I guess it depends on ones perspective. I had a difficult time remembering what web page I altered, but eventually my memory, unassisted by the computer, retrieved the information.
The page I had edited had to do with my home town, Chico, CA. I added some information about Chico’s efforts to try to distance itself from the “party school” reputation. I thought I had saved it, but when I checked the page the edit was no longer there, and the history shows no changes since March 29, 2008. Interestingly (or maybe not), almost all the information was supplied by one person, “Gregbard”.

I left two links to the wikipedia page I changed. The first is the actual page I changed and the second is the page I put my little comment about my grandfather. My comment is at the very bottom. In the discussion page there were no comments about my addition. I guess to the people editing the page the fact that my grandfather was born there wasn’t good enough for them. One of these days I’ll put something meaningful that will be a permanent fixture on that page.
I have to admit that I was very nervous about adding to someone else’s Wiki. I selected an art site related to Girl Scouts. I added a link to another website that has some cool art and craft activities for Scouts. It’s at the very bottom of the page.
http://cmg06f.wikispaces.com/Art+for+Girl+Scouts+and+Brownies
I edited the Iwakuni, Japan page. I added the following portions. “The castle area also offers a large number of trails for hiking and exercise.” and “The goal of MCAS Iwakuni is to create peaceful links of friendship between the visiting nation and the host country.”
The link is:

I worked on the wiki page from my school, Corona Fundamental Intermediate School. I simply added in a link to one of the clubs that was missing from the list. Earlier I had added the school’s vision statement. As of now, nobody has deleted my work.
In looking at the page, I am surprised at all the work that has been done on it, some of it was quite recent. What really surprises me is that I have no idea who is working on it. The information is accurate and relevant, but is not being done by anybody that works at the school that I know of.
Not surprisingly, there were cases of vandalism on the page that needed to be fixed. Actually, this was my original reason for visiting the page. Someone had rewritten our vision statement with a “new verb” written on for the way we teach our students.
oh yeah, my link:

I made an edit to the page about calico cats and the edit has been removed. The sentence I added contained information very similar to information found elsewhere in the page, so that’s probably why it was removed.

Well during class on Saturday I visited:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fashion#Areas_of_fashion
… and to no surprise my comment was gone. I didn’t know what else to type at the time so I wrote, “Fashion Rocks!”
Lame, I know but it was what came out at the time. So my comment is gone because it did not contribute any significant words of wisdom to the wikipedia page.
Oh well, I will try to make it more insightful the next time I am on Wikipedia.

I looked up a small town I used to vacation during the summers growing up, that I still visit every other year with my parents and sisters’ families. The town is Weld, Maine, which has been in my dad’s family for years and years.
The wikipedia page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weld%2C_Maine
describes demographics and location information about the town. I wasn’t really sure what to add, as I don’t know specifics like that, so I just added a comment at the end, stating “A beautiful place to vacation in the summer.”
There was no discussion regarding my edit and it is still there.
My post to Wikipedia took some research. In the end I added Tony Gwynn’s home run totals and categorized them as solo, 2-run, 3-run, and grand slams. I also noted how many of his home runs came when the game was tied or the Padres were behind. At this point it is still there.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_gwynn
As a huge Padres fan growing up, I made a post to Tony Gwynn’s Wikipedia page after doing some research. I listed his home run totals include how many people were on base and if he hit while the game was tied or the Padres were behind in the game. The post is still there at the very bottom of the heading career.

Okay. I added a comment on this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Problem_of_evil because I had no idea what to comment on. My response was to turn to my husband and say, “Quick, I have to post something to wikpedia and I don’t know anything, help me.” Since his a philosopher, particularly interested in the philosophy of religion and language, he chose this article. Apparently the wikipedian monks weren’t too happy with his addition because it was gone before the class was over.
I didn’t see anything about it in the discussion, but I did some checking up on the guy who deleted it. I’ll defer to him since I don’t feel any real ownership of my comments.
I made changes to the page of the school I teach at- deleted a kid who said he was an NFL player and added our new principal to the page and it has stood.
I made changes to my high school. I added my self as an alumni who teaches there. I also added some of the coaches names that I know currently coach at the school.
My Contribution to the World of Archery
I made some additions to the definition of a Compound Bow. My contribution was accepted! Wow! When I revisited the site, my contribution was labeled as being from and anonymous user, identified by the user’s numerical IP address. Great experience!

test
I did post here and it never showed. I did repost and was told that I had already posted my comment ( I cheat and cut and paste to run a spell check so I don’t look stupid)…. Anyway, one more time (see test above). I went to Wikipedia and searched for Madera Unified. I found a very interesting page on our school district. I found it to be very accurate so I didn’t mess it up. I was suprised to see that it was edited eight times this year, but I could ot tell by who (ip only). I did not have anything to add to it, and since I work for MUSD, I just played in the ’sandbox’.
